Rad am Ring: Brilliant start

Nürburgring, July 19, 2025, as of 4:00 PM – It’s back—the whirring of spokes echoing once again around the Nürburgring since last night. In the traditional opener, the individual time trial covering 22 kilometers and around 500 meters of elevation, 150 climb-approved speed junkies tested the Ring for its aero potential. Today, on Saturday, the touring riders, gravel bikers, amateur racers and the cycling offspring set off on their journey through the Green Hell. “The atmosphere is always one of a kind – for participants, supporters, and also for the organizing team and our service partner. This year is no exception,” enthuses chief organizer Hanns-Martin Fraas.

Opening night and touring rides

Before the time trialists set out on their demanding circuit last night, event director Hanns-Martin Fraas welcomed the Ring cyclists from the main stage. Among them many from our new title sponsor Fahrrad XXL, who does not only contribute with light installations at the Hohe Acht and prize vouchers for the podium finishers but is also actively involved in various disciplines. Including the time trial, where Jan Seidl from the Dextro Energy Sport Team x Hübel Bonn sped across the Nordschleife fastest in 32:33 minutes in the men’s category, Julia Schallau of www.bnb.bike led the women’s time trial in 36:51 minutes.

In a much more relaxed fashion and without any timing, around 1,750 touring riders hit the course at 9 a.m. this Saturday. All types of bicycles were permitted, as long as they were roadworthy, and the field made full use of that freedom with a colorful mix. “Participation in the touring rides on Saturday remains consistently high,” says Hanns-Martin Fraas happily.

Races
Saturday at the Ring traditionally belongs to various races. These include the classic amateur road races over 25, 75, and 150 kilometers, as well as the new gravel races over 25, 50 and 100 kilometers, which were met with great enthusiasm right from their debut and attracted the targeted 500 participants – and even more. After the two kids’ races over 4 and 8 kilometers, where the up-and-coming Ring cyclists received original participant medals at the finish line, it was time for the Grand Départ: around 2,000 amateur racers, 6,300 24-hour riders, and 510 gravel bikers set off on the course one discipline after the other.

“Currently we have 11,600 participants. Tomorrow’s Bundesliga race will bring in another 150, and we’re also expecting some late registrations for Sunday’s touring rides. It’s not unlikely that we’ll break the 12,000 mark and set a new participation record,” predicts chief organizer Hanns-Martin Fraas. But even more important to him is something else: celebrating a huge cycling festival together until tomorrow afternoon. The 24-hour solo and team riders are expected to cross the finish line from 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, and the winners of the pro race (Bundesliga) are due at around 3:38 p.m.

A brilliant start with the best (cloudy and cool) Eifel and cycling weather for Rad am Ring 2025. The highlight of the cycling event at the Nürburgring is the 24-hour race for road cyclists in teams of 2, 4, or 8, or as solo riders. The road bike course covers both the modern Grand Prix track and the legendary Nordschleife. Team camps are located right next to the track and in the pit lane, creating a truly unique atmosphere.
